South Nilandhe Atoll — Dhaalu in the administrative naming — is an atoll in the central Maldives that combines a growing resort scene with one of the country's most distinctive craft traditions. It is a compact ring of reefs and islands, increasingly visited, with diving, snorkelling and island culture among its draws.
Dhaalu is famous within the Maldives for its jewellery- and goldsmithing islands: the islands of Ribudhoo and Hulhudheli have a long-standing reputation for fine metalwork and craft, a heritage passed down through generations. The atoll capital, Kudahuvadhoo, is itself a place of interest — it has an airport, and it is home to a notable archaeological mound (havitta) marking the Maldives' pre-Islamic past, one of the more impressive such sites in the country.
South Nilandhe suits travellers wanting a central atoll that pairs comfortable resorts with genuine craft heritage, history and good reefs.
When is the best time to visit?
South Nilandhe is a year-round destination, with the dry season (December–April) bringing the calmest seas, clearest water and best all-round conditions — the peak and most expensive period.
The wet season (May–November) brings more rain and wind and lower prices. Diving and snorkelling are rewarding through the year, and underwater visibility is generally good. The Islamic festivals of Eid are the main events on the local-island calendar.

WhatsAppHow do you get around?
South Nilandhe is reached from Male by a domestic flight to Kudahuvadhoo Airport, the atoll's air gateway, or by speedboat and seaplane for resort transfers.
Between the inhabited islands, public ferries and speedboats connect local islands such as Kudahuvadhoo, Ribudhoo, Hulhudheli and others, and guesthouses and resorts arrange transfers and excursions. The atoll's dive sites, craft islands and archaeological mound are reached by boat. As across the Maldives, independent travel means planning around ferry schedules; resorts and guesthouses handle transfers for their guests.

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
Dining in South Nilandhe divides between resort cuisine — international buffets and fine dining — and the genuinely Maldivian food of the local islands, best experienced in a guesthouse.
The Maldivian table is built on tuna and rice: garudhiya (clear tuna broth with rice, lime and chilli), mas huni (smoked tuna with coconut, the classic flatbread breakfast), and fish curries. Hedhikaa — savoury fish short-eats — are taken with sweet tea, and coconut features throughout. On inhabited islands the food is halal and alcohol-free; alcohol is served only at resorts.
What is the culture like?
South Nilandhe's inhabited islands are settled Maldivian communities shaped by Islam and the sea. The atoll holds a distinctive place in the country's craft heritage: the jewellers and goldsmiths of Ribudhoo and Hulhudheli carry on a tradition of fine metalwork that has long made these islands renowned across the Maldives. The archaeological mound at Kudahuvadhoo is, in turn, a reminder of the atoll's pre-Islamic Buddhist past.
The major celebrations are the Islamic festivals of Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha, marked with communal prayer, feasting, music and games. Maldivian cultural traditions — bodu beru drumming and dance, craft and a close communal life — remain part of island culture. Visitors to local islands are asked to respect local custom: modest dress in the village, alcohol-free, with designated "bikini beaches" for swimwear.
