Overview

Mulaku Atoll — Meemu in the administrative naming — is a small atoll in the central Maldives, a quiet region of reefs and inhabited islands with a modest, developing tourism scene. It lies away from the busiest resort clusters, and its appeal is in uncrowded diving, surfing and authentic island life rather than a dense spread of private resorts.

The atoll is a compact ring of reefs and channels, with inhabited islands including Muli, the atoll capital, and a small number of resort islands. Meemu has quietly built a reputation for diving — channel dives and reef thilas rich in fish — and for surf breaks along its eastern reefs that draw a steady trickle of surfers.

Mulaku suits divers, surfers and independent travellers seeking a calm, lesser-known atoll, whether based in a guesthouse on a local island or in one of the atoll's resorts.

When to Visit

Mulaku is a year-round destination, with the dry season (December–April) bringing the calmest seas, clearest water and best all-round conditions — the peak period.

For surfers, the southwest monsoon months bring the more consistent swell to the atoll's eastern breaks. The wet season (May–November) otherwise brings more rain and wind and lower prices. Diving and snorkelling are rewarding through the year. The Islamic festivals of Eid are the main events on the local-island calendar.

Getting Around

Mulaku is reached from Male by a domestic flight to the atoll's airport, or by speedboat and seaplane for resort transfers.

Between the inhabited islands, public ferries and speedboats connect local islands such as Muli and others, and guesthouses and resorts arrange transfers and excursions to the atoll's dive sites and surf breaks. As across the Maldives, independent travel means planning around ferry schedules; guesthouses and resorts handle the logistics for their guests.

Cuisine

Mulaku's food is genuinely Maldivian, best experienced in a guesthouse on the local islands; the atoll's resorts serve international cuisine.

The Maldivian table is built on tuna and rice: garudhiya (clear tuna broth with rice, lime and chilli), mas huni (smoked tuna with coconut, the classic flatbread breakfast), and fish curries. Hedhikaa — savoury fish short-eats — are taken with sweet tea, and coconut features throughout. On inhabited islands the food is halal and alcohol-free; alcohol is served only at resorts.

Culture & Festivals

Mulaku's inhabited islands are settled Maldivian communities shaped by Islam and the sea. Fishing — the pole-and-line tuna fishery — and increasingly tourism are the mainstays, and island life follows prayer times and the tides.

The major celebrations are the Islamic festivals of Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha, marked with communal prayer, feasting, music and games. Maldivian cultural traditions — bodu beru drumming and dance, crafts and a close communal life — are part of island culture. Visitors to local islands are asked to respect local custom: modest dress in the village, alcohol-free, with designated "bikini beaches" for swimwear.
