Wilayah Persekutuan Labuan is a Federal Territory comprising the main Labuan Island and six smaller islets, located 8 km off the coast of Sabah in East Malaysia. Covering just 92 km², Labuan has been a free-trade zone and International Offshore Financial Centre since 1990, attracting business travellers alongside a modest but growing leisure tourism sector. Its strategic position at the mouth of Brunei Bay made it an important port during the British colonial era and, later, a key base in the Brunei and North Borneo campaigns of World War II.
The territory is best known for its duty-free shopping — alcohol, tobacco, chocolate, and cosmetics are significantly cheaper than on the mainland — and its well-preserved WWII relics, including war memorials, shipwrecks, and a preserved cemetery. Labuan's beaches and coral reefs offer quieter alternatives to more famous Malaysian dive destinations, and its laid-back pace provides a contrast to the bustle of Kota Kinabalu. The majority population is Malay and Bruneian Malay, with significant Chinese, Kadazan, and Indian communities.
When is the best time to visit?
Labuan enjoys a tropical equatorial climate. The drier season runs from February to September, with the northeast monsoon (October–January) bringing heavier rain and rougher seas that can affect ferry services. Diving conditions are best between March and October. Labuan's annual Fleet Race sailing regatta (April/May) and the Labuan International Sea Challenge (August) are highlights. Duty-free shopping is available year-round.

WhatsAppHow do you get around?
Labuan Island is small enough to explore by rental car (RM 80–120/day) or taxi (flag down or book by phone). Grab operates on the island. Taxi fares between major points range RM 10–30. Scooters are available for hire (RM 40–60/day). The island has one main road circumnavigating it, making navigation straightforward. Ferry services connect Labuan to Kota Kinabalu (Sabah), Menumbok (Sabah), and Serasa (Brunei).

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
Labuan's food reflects its multicultural population and coastal location. Seafood is the star — grilled fish, prawns, squid, and crabs served with sambal and rice. The local nasi lemak is excellent, and the island's duty-free status means imported ingredients and drinks are unusually affordable. Street-food stalls and kedai kopi (coffee shops) cluster around the main town area serving mee goreng, roti canai, and laksa. There is also a strong Bruneian Malay influence in dishes like ambuyat (sago starch) and grilled seafood.
What is the culture like?
Labuan celebrates the same national festivals as the rest of Malaysia: Hari Raya (Eid), Chinese New Year, and Deepavali. The Labuan International Sea Challenge (August) features dragon boat races, sailing regattas, and water sports. Labuan Day (16 April) commemorates the territory's establishment. The local culture blends Malay, Kadazan, and Bruneian traditions, with traditional dance performances occasionally held at cultural events.
