Bagan Serai
Perak, Malaysia
Why visit Bagan Serai?
Bagan Serai is a town in northwestern Perak, about 50 km south of Butterworth. Its name — "bagan" (jetty) and "serai" (lemongrass) — recalls its start as a riverside trading post for lemongrass in the late 19th century, before rubber and then paddy farming took over. Today it is a collection and processing centre for the Kerian Irrigation Scheme, one of Malaysia's largest paddy-growing areas.
