Ankarafantsika National Park

Mahajanga, Madagascar

Why visit Ankarafantsika National Park?

Ankarafantsika National Park covers roughly 136,500 hectares (about 1,365 km²) of dry deciduous forest, savanna, lakes, and swamp, on the RN4 highway between Antananarivo and Mahajanga, about 115 km from the coastal city of Mahajanga. It is one of the best places in Madagascar to see Coquerel's sifaka and the mongoose lemur — among eight lemur species recorded in the park, three of which are critically endangered — as well as around 127 recorded bird species, including the endemic Van Dam's vanga. The park holds more than 820 plant species, the large majority endemic to Madagascar.

The park centres on Lake Ravelobe, a roughly 0.6 km² lake that attracts waterbirds and is the setting for a popular three-hour walk. The park's forest includes baobabs and tamarind trees.
