Why visit?

Wiltz is a canton in northwestern Luxembourg, occupying the forested hills and deep river valleys of the Ardennes highlands in the Éislek region. It is one of the Grand Duchy's most scenically dramatic and historically significant cantons: the landscape is a rolling patchwork of dense woodland, steep-sided valleys carved by the Wiltz and Sûre rivers, and small hilltop villages. The cantonal seat, Wiltz, straddles the river Wiltz across a steep hillside crowned by its imposing 18th-century castle.

The canton is deeply marked by its role in the Second World War. Wiltz was the starting point of Luxembourg's general strike of 1942, a courageous act of resistance against Nazi conscription. Today the canton draws visitors for the Wiltz Castle and its open-air festival, the spectacular Upper Sûre lake and natural park, and the quiet, wooded countryside.

When is the best time to visit?

Late spring through early autumn (May–September) is the prime window. The Ardennes forests are at their greenest from May through June, and outdoor attractions are at their best in warm, dry weather. Summer daytime highs typically reach the low 20s °C.

The Wiltz Festival (late June to mid-July) is the canton's cultural highlight — open-air theatre, opera, ballet, and concerts in the castle grounds. Autumn brings strong colour to the forested hills, making it ideal for walking. Winters are cold and damp with occasional snow.

How do you get around?

Wiltz is accessible by road via the N12, which connects it to Ettelbruck and Luxembourg City — roughly an hour's drive from the capital. By rail, Wiltz sits on line 1b, a branch of the main Luxembourg–Gouvy (Belgium) line, with connections to Clervaux, Troisvierges, and Luxembourg City.

All public transport is free. Within the canton, distances between villages are short but the steep, hilly terrain makes cycling demanding. A car is the most practical way to explore the dispersed villages and the Upper Sûre area.

Where should you go?

  • Wiltz — the cantonal seat and cultural hub, built dramatically on a steep hillside, crowned by Wiltz Castle and its gardens, home to the annual Wiltz Festival.
  • Esch-sur-Sûre — a picture-postcard village on a rocky promontory above the Sûre, with a medieval castle ruin, gateway to the Upper Sûre Natural Park.
  • Winseler — a quiet rural commune with walking trails through Ardennes countryside.
  • Boulaide — a small village on the western edge of the canton near the Upper Sûre lake.
  • Goesdorf — a rural commune in the wooded hills north of the Sûre valley.
  • Kiischpelt — a small commune along the Wiltz river valley with scenic walking country.
  • Wilwerwiltz — a tiny village on the rail line through the Wiltz valley.
  • Bavigne — a hamlet on the shores of the Upper Sûre reservoir.
  • Upper Sure Natural Park — Luxembourg's only national park, encompassing the vast Upper Sûre reservoir and surrounding forests.

What should you eat?

The Wiltz canton's cuisine reflects its Ardennes setting. Traditional Luxembourgish dishes dominate: Judd mat Gaardebounen, Bouneschlupp, Träipen (black pudding), and Gromperekichelcher. Game — venison, wild boar, hare — features more prominently than in lowland cantons.

Dining in Wiltz town centres on the Grand-Rue and streets around the castle. The village of Esch-sur-Sûre also has a handful of restaurants. Dining options thin out considerably outside main settlements.

What is the culture like?

Wiltz's cultural identity is shaped by its wartime history and castle heritage. The Wiltz Festival (late June to mid-July) is the canton's flagship event — open-air theatre, opera, ballet, and concerts in the castle grounds. The Nuit des Lampions (mid-September) transforms the castle gardens into a luminous display.

The canton's wartime memory is preserved in the National Strike Memorial honouring the 1942 general strike, the Museum of the Ardennes Offensive at the castle, and a restored M4 Sherman tank memorial.
