Diekirch is a canton in north-eastern Luxembourg, centred on the town of the same name — a settlement of 7,250 people best known for its brewery and the National Museum of Military History. The canton lies along the Sauer (Sure) river valley, where the rolling farmland of the Gutland transitions into the forested hills of the Ardennes. Its proximity to Ettelbruck, a major transport junction, makes Diekirch both a regional hub and a gateway to northern Luxembourg's outdoor attractions.
The town of Diekirch has a long history stretching back to Roman times, though its modern identity is shaped by two institutions: the Diekirch Brewery, one of Luxembourg's most recognised beer brands, and the Military History Museum, which documents the Battle of the Bulge and the liberation of Luxembourg with remarkably detailed life-size dioramas.
The canton's surrounding communes follow the Sauer and its tributaries through a landscape of steep-sided valleys, forested ridges, and small farming villages. Bourscheid Castle, one of Luxembourg's largest medieval fortifications, crowns a hilltop above the river and draws visitors from across the country.
When is the best time to visit?
May through September offers the best conditions, with temperatures of 15–25°C and long evenings along the Sauer river. June and July are the warmest months, ideal for the Mambo Ride whitewater kayak course and riverside walks. Autumn is beautiful in the Sauer valley, with the surrounding forests turning gold and copper.
Winter is cold and grey, with occasional snow. The Military History Museum and the Historical Car Museum provide year-round indoor attractions. Carnival season (February–March) brings small parades and celebrations to the town.

WhatsAppHow do you get around?
Diekirch is the canton's transport hub. The town centre and its pedestrianised Grand-Rue are easily explored on foot. Direct trains reach Luxembourg City in under 50 minutes (twice hourly). Buses connect Diekirch to Ettelbruck, Beaufort, Echternach, and Larochette, among other destinations.
The N7 road runs through the canton, linking northward to Clervaux and Troisvierges and southward to Ettelbruck. For reaching Bourscheid Castle and the more remote villages, a car is the most practical option. The Sauer valley cycle path offers flat, scenic riding along the river.
Where should you go?

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
Diekirch's food culture mirrors Luxembourg's national cuisine: generous portions of Franco-Germanic comfort food. Judd mat Gaardebounen (smoked pork with broad beans), Bouneschlupp (bean soup), and Gromperekichelcher (potato fritters) are local staples. The Diekirch Brewery's lagers are ubiquitous.
In Diekirch town, dining options range from traditional restaurants on Grand-Rue to international cuisine in Ettelbruck, including Indian, Italian, and Portuguese restaurants reflecting the area's immigrant communities. The Sauer valley produces local honey, game, and river fish — trout and pike appear on restaurant menus in season.
What is the culture like?
The National Museum of Military History (MNHM) is the canton's foremost cultural institution. Founded in 1984 in Diekirch's old brewery, it houses life-size dioramas depicting the Battle of the Bulge, including a 150 m² recreation of the Sauer river crossing in January 1945.
Local traditions include Buergbrennen (bonfire night, first Sunday of Lent), village fêtes in summer, and the Christmas market season. The General Patton Memorial in Ettelbruck honours the US Third Army's liberation of the town during the Battle of the Bulge — a ceremony is held each December to mark the anniversary.
