Panevezys
Panevėžio apskritis, Lithuania
Why visit Panevezys?
Panevėžys is an industrial city in the Aukštaitija region, Lithuania's fifth-largest city with a population of about 89,000. It is situated midway along the highway between Vilnius and Riga, on a loop of the Nevėžis River — "Panevėžys" means "by the Nevėžis." The city has long been industrial, with major trades in concrete, metalworks, ceramics, glass and flax processing.
The town centre has been rebuilt many times, and much of it dates from the 1960s/70s, with drab but functional architecture leavened by broad squares and parks along the riverside. The city has a strong cultural identity, with the Juozas Miltinis Drama Theatre, Music Theatre and several museums. The Aukštaitija narrow-gauge railway and the nearby Hill of Crosses add to the regional attractions.
Climate is continental with cold winters (averaging −5 °C in January) and warm summers (averaging 22 °C in July).
