Why visit?

Marijampolės apskritis (Marijampolė County) is a southern Lithuanian county bordering Poland and the Kaliningrad Oblast of Russia. The county lies in the Suvalkija (Sūduva) region, characterised by gently rolling agricultural plains, river valleys and small historic towns. The landscape is predominantly flat to gently undulating, with the Šešupė and Širvinta rivers winding through the countryside, and the Kalvarija district in the south offering wooded areas near the border.

The county's main town, Marijampolė, is an industrial and administrative centre with a grid-pattern town centre rebuilt after wartime destruction. The surrounding towns — Vilkaviškis, Šakiai, Kalvarija, Kazlų Rūda and Kybartai — each have their own character, from the border-town atmosphere of Kybartai to the quiet rurality of Šakiai. The region has a strong agricultural identity, with livestock farming and crop production shaping both the landscape and local culture.

When is the best time to visit?

May through September offers the most pleasant conditions, with average highs of 19–24 °C in summer. The Suvalkija region is at its greenest in June and July, ideal for cycling, hiking and exploring the countryside. The Marijampolė City Days (July) feature concerts, fairs and street performances.

Spring (April–May) brings wildflowers to the river meadows and fewer tourists. Autumn (September–October) is harvest season, with local markets overflowing with produce and the forests turning gold. Winters (December–February) are cold, averaging −2 to −6 °C, but the region's churches and small-town atmospheres are atmospheric under snow.

How do you get around?

Marijampolė is connected to Kaunas by regular trains (1 hour) and hourly buses (1 hour, ~€6). The A5 highway links the county to Kaunas (60 km northeast) and continues as S61 to Warsaw. Buses connect Marijampolė to Vilkaviškis (30 min), Šakiai (20 min), Kalvarija (25 min) and Kybartai (40 min). The Kautra bus company operates most regional routes.

For exploring the wider county, a car is recommended, as smaller towns like Kazlų Rūda and Kybartai have limited public transport connections. The compact town centres are all walkable, and local taxis are affordable.

What should you eat?

Marijampolė County's cuisine reflects its agricultural roots. Hearty dishes include cepelinai (potato dumplings), bandzos (a traditional soup of barley, groats and vegetables) and various pork and potato dishes. The region is known for its dairy products, particularly varškės sūris (curd cheese) and locally produced butter.

In Marijampolė, restaurants along Gedimino Street and near the town centre serve traditional Lithuanian fare. The Mercure hotel's Central Grill & Lounge offers a more international menu. In smaller towns, local kaimo turizmo (rural tourism) farmsteads serve home-cooked meals featuring locally sourced ingredients. Freshwater fish from the region's rivers is a seasonal specialty.

What is the culture like?

The region maintains strong folk traditions, with annual atlaidai (church festivals) in Kalvarija and other towns during the summer months. The Kalvarija church festival in July is one of the region's most significant cultural events, drawing pilgrims and visitors. Marijampolė's City Days in July feature concerts, craft fairs and open-air performances.

The Tauro District Museum in Marijampolė tells the story of Lithuanian partisans, exiles and deportees during the Soviet period. The Grinius Presidential Museum preserves the legacy of Kazys Grinius, who served as Lithuania's president in the 1920s. Local arts and crafts fairs celebrate traditional Lithuanian woodworking, weaving and pottery.
