Why visit?

Gamprin (LI-03) is one of the eleven communes of Liechtenstein, set in the country's low-lying Unterland (lowland) along the right bank of the Alpine Rhine that forms the border with Switzerland. It is among the smallest and least-trafficked municipalities in the principality, made up principally of the village of Gamprin itself and the riverside settlement of Bendern. Where Liechtenstein's southern communes climb into steep Alpine terrain, Gamprin occupies gentle valley-floor farmland and modest hillsides, giving it an open, rural character within a few minutes' drive of the capital, Vaduz.

The commune's defining landmark is the hill of Bendern, crowned by the parish church of St. Mary (Pfarrkirche Mariä Himmelfahrt), a site of long-standing religious and historical importance in the region. The surrounding fields, Rhine embankment paths, and quiet lanes make Gamprin less a destination of "sights" than a place to experience everyday Liechtenstein at a slower pace — agriculture, riverside walking and cycling, and views across to the Swiss canton of St. Gallen.

For travelers, Gamprin works best as a tranquil base or a stop on a wider tour of the Unterland communes (Eschen, Mauren, Ruggell, Schellenberg), all of which sit within a very compact area. Distances everywhere in Liechtenstein are short, and Gamprin is no exception: nearly everything in the country is reachable within a 20–30 minute drive.

When is the best time to visit?

The most comfortable months are late spring through early autumn (May–September), when the Rhine valley is warm, the surrounding farmland is green, and walking and cycling conditions along the river are at their best. Summer days are mild to warm; the valley floor can feel humid, but evenings cool quickly.

Autumn brings clear light and harvest activity across the Unterland's farmland, while winters in the lowland are cold and often grey, with the Rhine valley prone to fog — note that Gamprin sits well below the ski terrain, so winter sports require heading to the southern Alpine communes (Triesenberg/Malbun).

How do you get around?

Liechtenstein has no airport or passenger rail station within Gamprin, so movement is by road and the national LIEmobil bus network, which links all communes and connects to the Swiss and Austrian rail systems. The nearest mainline railway stations are across the border — Buchs (SG) and Sargans in Switzerland, and Feldkirch in Austria — each reachable by bus and short drive.

Within the commune and to neighboring villages, distances are very short: Gamprin and Bendern are essentially adjacent, and the other Unterland communes are only a few kilometres away. Vaduz is roughly 10 km to the south (about 15–20 minutes by car). Taxis exist but are expensive; LIEmobil buses are frequent and inexpensive, and cycling is genuinely practical given the flat valley terrain and the dedicated paths along the Rhine.

Where should you go?

  • Gamprin — The residential lowland village of the commune, featuring the beautiful Gampriner Seele nature reserve.
  • Bendern — A historic village on Church Hill, famous for the ancient St. Mary's Church and the historic 1699 oath of allegiance site.

What should you eat?

Gamprin's food follows the broader Liechtenstein and Alpine-Rhine valley tradition rather than having a distinct commune cuisine. Expect hearty regional staples such as Käsknöpfle (the local cheese-and-onion dumplings, often served with apple sauce), Ribel (a maize/semolina dish), and rösti, alongside the Swiss-Austrian dairy and sausage products typical of the region. Dining is mostly in village restaurants and Gasthäuser; prices follow Swiss-franc (CHF) levels, which are high by European standards.

What is the culture like?

The cultural focal point of the commune is Bendern hill and its church, historically tied to important moments in Liechtenstein's regional history. As elsewhere in the principality, the rhythm of the year is shaped by Catholic feast days and national observances — most notably Liechtenstein's National Day on 15 August, celebrated countrywide.
