Nendeln

Eschen, Liechtenstein

Why visit Nendeln?

Nendeln is a peaceful and historic village located in the northern municipality of Eschen, Liechtenstein. Home to about 1,400 residents, the village is nestled at the base of the Maurerberg mountain, along the primary transport route connecting Liechtenstein with Feldkirch, Austria. Unlike the administrative center of Eschen proper on the other side of the Eschnerberg hill, Nendeln has a distinct, linear layout and a relaxed, residential feel.

The village has deep historical roots, with archaeological findings showing Roman presence, most notably the remains of a Roman villa rustica. Historically, Nendeln was a farming community, but it became famous in the 19th century as a hub for traditional ceramic craftsmanship. Today, it balances its residential character with small-scale industrial businesses, and serves as a key gateway for travelers entering Liechtenstein from Austria.

Nendeln experiences a temperate alpine climate, characterized by warm summers and cold, snowy winters. Its location at the foot of the mountains means it can receive early shade in the winter afternoons. The best time to visit is from May to October, when the walking trails are clear of snow and the local ceramic workshop is open for tours.

By Plane

The nearest major international airport is Zürich Airport (ZRH) in Switzerland, located approximately 115 km to the west. From Zürich Airport, you can take a Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) train to Buchs SG or Sargans, and then transfer to a LIEmobil bus to Nendeln. The total journey takes about 2 to 2.5 hours. A closer but smaller regional option is St. Gallen-Altenrhein Airport (ACH) in Switzerland, about 40 km away.

By Train

Nendeln has its own railway station, Nendeln Bahnhof, situated on the active Feldkirch (Austria) to Buchs SG (Switzerland) railway line. The line is operated by the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB). However, passenger service is highly limited, with only a few regional trains stopping here on weekdays, mainly catering to cross-border commuters. If train schedules are inconvenient, it is better to take a train to Buchs SG or Feldkirch and continue to Nendeln by bus.

By Car / Road

Nendeln is located directly on the main Churer Strasse (Route 16). If driving from Austria, cross the border at Tosters/Schaanwald and drive south for about 3 minutes (approx. 2 km). LIEmobil Bus Route 11 is the main public transit connection, linking Nendeln directly with Feldkirch (Austria), Eschen, Schaan, Vaduz, and Sargans (Switzerland) every 20-30 minutes.

Nendeln is very small and linear, meaning you can walk to any destination in the village within 15 minutes. Paved sidewalks run along the main road, and quiet side streets offer pleasant paths for strolling.
