The district extends along the Mediterranean coast and includes the suburbs of Tajura and Janzur, as well as the surrounding agricultural land of the Jifarah Plain. Tripoli itself is the political, economic, and cultural heart of Libya, with a history stretching back to Phoenician settlement (Oea) in the 7th century BCE. The district is the most developed in Libya, with international airport connections, major hospitals, universities, and cultural institutions.
