Overview

Sabhā is a popularate in southwestern Libya, in the heart of the Fezzan region. The district is centred on the city of Sabha, the largest settlement in the Sahara interior of Libya and the traditional capital of Fezzan. The landscape is defined by the Sabha Oasis, a large cluster of date-palm plantations fed by underground aquifers, surrounded by the vast gravel hamada and sand seas. The district includes the settlements of Tamanhint, Samnu, and Umm al-Abid. Sabha was historically a major stop on the Trans-Saharan caravan trade, and today it is the administrative and transport hub for southern Libya. The population is a mix of Arab, Tuareg, and Toubou communities.

When to Visit

November to March is the only comfortable period. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 45°C. Spring brings the ghibli, a hot desert wind that reduces visibility.

Culture & Festivals

Sabha is a cultural crossroads of Arab, Tuareg, and Toubou traditions. The Sahara Festival (held intermittently) features camel races, poetry, traditional music, and dance. The Fezzan region has a distinct musical tradition based on the zokra (bagpipes) and gasba (flute).
