Murzuq is a popularate in southwestern Libya, in the heart of the Fezzan region of the Sahara. It is named after the historic city of Murzuk, the former capital of the Fezzan province. The district is defined by the Murzuk Sand Sea (Idhan Murzuq), a vast expanse of dunes in the south, and the oases of Traghan, Zuwaylah, Umm al-Aranib, Al Qatrun, and Tajarhi in the north. Historically, Murzuq was a critical hub on the Trans-Saharan trade routes, connecting the Mediterranean world to the empires of West and Central Africa. The landscape is predominantly desert, with scattered oases supporting date-palm agriculture. The population includes Arab, Tuareg, and Toubou communities.
When to Visit
November to March is the only comfortable period. Summer is extreme, with temperatures exceeding 50°C. Sandstorms are common in spring.
