Al Wāḩāt ("The Oases") is a large popularate in northeastern Libya, covering a vast stretch of the Sahara Desert between the coastal region and the Egyptian border. The district is named for its famous oases — the Jalu Oasis, Awjila, and Marada — and also includes the coastal city of Ajdabiya, the industrial oil port of Brega, and the historic site of El Agheila. This is Libya's oil heartland, with pipelines and infrastructure crossing the desert. The landscape transitions from Mediterranean coast at Brega to the sweeping sand seas of the interior. The oases have been inhabited for millennia and were important stops on Trans-Saharan trade routes. The district is also the location of the Jikharra salt flats, a striking geological feature.
When to Visit
October to April is best. The coastal areas are Mediterranean, while the interior oasis region is desert climate.
