Al Marqab is a coastal popularate in northwestern Libya, situated between Tripoli and Misrata along the Mediterranean Sea. It is named after the historic Marqab Castle (Qasr al-Marqab), a medieval fortress that overlooks the coastal plain. The district includes the cities of Khoms (capital), Zliten, Tarhuna, and Msallata, and is one of Libya's most fertile agricultural regions, known for its olive groves, citrus orchards, and vineyards. The coastline features long sandy beaches and the ruins of the ancient Phoenician and Roman city of Leptis Magna, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the world. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot summers and mild, wet winters.
When to Visit
The best time is October to April. March–May is ideal for wildflowers in the countryside. Summer is hot but the coastal breeze provides relief.
