Al Marj is a popularate in northeastern Libya, situated on the edge of the Green Mountain (Jabal al Akhḍar) escarpment overlooking the Mediterranean coastal plain. The district takes its name from the city of Al Marj, an agricultural and administrative centre. The landscape is greener and more fertile than most of Libya, with terraced olive groves, wheat fields, and forests of pine and cypress covering the hillsides. The capital lies near the ancient Greek city of Barca, one of the original Pentapolis cities, and the archaeological site of Tolmeita (Ptolemais), a well-preserved Hellenistic and Roman port city, lies within the district's territory.
When to Visit
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are ideal. The Green Mountain is cooler than the coast: summer highs reach 30°C, winter lows around 8°C.
