Photography coming soonOverview
Al Jufrah is a popularate in central Libya, deep in the Sahara Desert, centred on a string of oases that have supported human settlement for millennia. The district includes the oases of Hun, Sokna, Waddan, and Zillah, which form a chain of palm groves and natural springs along the Wadi al-Jufrah depression in the Sahara. Historically, Al Jufrah was a critical crossroads for Trans-Saharan caravans, connecting the coastal cities of Tripolitania to Fezzan and the deeper Sahara. The landscape is hyper-arid, with vast gravel plains (serir) and sand seas punctuated by the lush green pockets of the oases. The population is a mix of Arab and Berber descent, with strong traditions of hospitality rooted in the oasis culture.
When to Visit
October to March is the only comfortable period. Summer (June–September) is extreme, with daytime temperatures exceeding 45°C. Winter nights can be cold, dropping to 5°C. Spring brings occasional sandstorms (ghibli).

The main road from Tripoli to Sabha passes through Al Jufrah (via Hun). Shared minibuses connect Hun to Tripoli (600 km north) and Sabha (200 km south). A 4WD is helpful for visiting the more remote oases. There is no passenger rail.

WhatsAppCuisine
Oasis cuisine centres on dates, couscous, lamb, and goat. The dates of Al Jufrah — particularly the deglet nour variety — are prized across Libya. Traditional dishes include bazin (barley dough served with tomato and lamb sauce) and asida (sweet porridge). Fresh water from the oases is sweet and valued.
Culture & Festivals
The oasis communities maintain traditions of oral poetry, folk music, and the annual date harvest festivals. The Senussi order historically had a presence in the area. Libyan national holidays are observed.
