Why visit?

Al Jabal al Akhḑar ("the Green Mountain") is a distinct geographical region and popularate in northeastern Libya, centred on the Mediterranean coastal escarpment that rises to 850 metres. It is the greenest part of Libya, receiving significantly more rainfall than any other region, supporting dense forests of pine, juniper, and cypress, as well as terraced agriculture of olives, figs, and grapes. The district includes the ancient cities of the Greek Pentapolis — Cyrene (Shahhat) and Apollonia (Susa) — making it the richest archaeological zone in Libya.

The cooler, wetter climate sets Al Jabal al Akhḑar apart: summers are warm (26–30°C) rather than scorching, and winters can be cool (6–12°C) with occasional frost on the highest ridges. The population is concentrated in Bayda (the commercial capital), Shahhat (archaeological centre), and the coastal resort of Susa.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring (March–May) is ideal, when the hillsides are carpeted with wildflowers. Autumn (September–November) is also pleasant. The cool, dry summer months (June–August) are a welcome escape from the coastal heat. December–February can be rainy and chilly on the heights.

How do you get around?

The coastal highway runs along the base of the escarpment, with winding roads climbing to Bayda and Shahhat. Shared minibuses connect the main towns. Al Abraq International Airport (LAQ IATA) near Bayda serves domestic flights from Tripoli. A car is necessary to explore the archaeological sites scattered across the escarpment.

Where should you go?

  • Bayda — The commercial and administrative centre of the Green Mountain region, with the Al Abraq airport and the Balagrae ruins.
  • Shahhat — Modern town adjacent to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Cyrene, the most spectacular Greek ruins in North Africa.
  • Susa — Coastal town at the foot of the escarpment, site of ancient Apollonia, the port of Cyrene.

What should you eat?

The Green Mountain's cuisine makes use of its agricultural abundance: fresh olives and olive oil, figs, pomegranates, almonds, and grapes. Lamb is the preferred meat, often slow-cooked with fruits and spices. The local tagine is distinct from Moroccan varieties, being more akin to a slow-cooked casserole. Fresh bread is ubiquitous.

What is the culture like?

The region's identity is deeply linked to its Greek heritage and the modern Senussi Islamic tradition. Bayda was chosen as the site of the country's intended new capital in the 1950s and retains government buildings from that era. The tombs of companions of the Prophet Muhammad, including Ruwaifi bin Thabit al-Ansari in Bayda, are local pilgrimage sites. The ancient theatre of Cyrene occasionally hosts cultural festivals.
