Thaba Bosiu

Maseru, Lesotho

Why visit Thaba Bosiu?

Thaba Bosiu is a sacred sandstone mountain and national monument about 20 km east of Maseru. It was the mountain fortress of King Moshoeshoe I, the founder of the Basotho nation, from 1824 until his death in 1870. The flat-topped mountain was impregnable to enemy attacks and served as the spiritual and political heart of the Basotho people.

The site is of great historical and cultural significance, often called the birthplace of the Basotho nation. Guided tours explore the summit with its springs, caves, and the king's grave.
