Maseru District surrounds the capital city of Lesotho, Maseru, and extends into the surrounding lowlands and foothills. It is the most populous and economically important district in the country, blending urban development with rural Basotho villages and historic sites. The best time to visit is during the dry winter months from May to September, when days are sunny and clear.

The district has good paved roads connecting Maseru to Roma, Morija, and Thaba Bosiu. The A1 and A2 highways pass through the district. Minibus taxis are the main form of public transport.
