Leribe

Leribe District is located in northern Lesotho, bordering South Africa. The district is known for its agricultural production, particularly wheat and maize, grown in the fertile lowlands along the Caledon River. The district capital is Hlotse, a historic town with a busy market, while Maputsoe is an industrial centre near the South African border.

The district offers a mix of lowland farmland and mountain scenery, with the Maloti Mountains rising to the east. It is an important area for understanding Basotho rural life.

The dry winter months from May to September are the best time to visit. Summer (November to February) is the rainy season with afternoon thunderstorms.

The A1 highway runs through Leribe District, connecting Hlotse and Maputsoe to Maseru and Butha-Buthe. The road east towards Ha Lejone climbs into the mountains. Minibus taxis are the main form of transport.
