Botha-Bothe District is located in the far north of Lesotho, bordering South Africa's Free State province. It is a mountainous district centred on the town of Butha-Buthe, one of the oldest settlements in the country. The district is known for its dramatic mountain scenery, including the Moteng Pass and the road to Oxbow, which offers access to the Maloti Mountains.
The district is a gateway to the northern highlands and a popular area for hiking and pony trekking. The climate is cooler than the lowlands due to higher elevation.
When to Visit
The best time to visit is from May to September during the dry winter season. Snow is possible on the high mountain passes in winter. Summer (November to February) brings afternoon thunderstorms.
