Why visit?

Rēzekne is the largest city of Latgale, Latvia's easternmost and most culturally distinct region, sitting on the Rēzekne River roughly 240 km east of Riga. Known locally as the heart of Latgale, it has long been a crossroads: a major railway junction where lines from Riga, Daugavpils and the eastern border converge, and a border town shaped in turn by Livonian, Polish-Lithuanian and Russian rule. That layered history shows up in the city's mix of Orthodox and Catholic churches, its strong Russian-speaking minority, and a local Latgalian language and identity that many residents keep proudly alive.

For visitors, Rēzekne is less a headline destination than a practical and interesting base: a compact centre with the ruins of a medieval castle, a striking modern monument, and easy access to the lakes and forests of eastern Latvia. Travellers connecting between Riga and the Baltic states often find themselves with a few hours or a night here, and the city rewards that layover with genuine, unpolished charm rather than a manufactured tourist experience.

When is the best time to visit?

Peak season runs June through August, when long daylight hours make it easiest to explore the surrounding lakes and Rāzna National Park. Expect warm, sometimes humid days in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius, modest crowds even in high season since Rēzekne remains off the main tourist circuit, and the fullest calendar of open-air festivals. Late June is especially atmospheric around Jāņi (Midsummer), celebrated with bonfires, oak wreaths, and folk songs.

Shoulder season, in May and September, brings milder weather, fewer visitors, and lower accommodation prices, with the countryside particularly attractive in September as birch and maple foliage turns. Spring can be muddy after snowmelt, so May is the more comfortable shoulder month.

Off season, from November through March, is cold, with average temperatures well below freezing in January and short daylight hours. Snow cover is reliable and can be scenic around Lake Rāzna, but many rural guesthouses and museums reduce their hours. This is the season for those specifically seeking winter activities like ice fishing rather than general sightseeing.

How do you get around?

Rēzekne's compact centre is walkable, with the castle ruins, main square, and Sacred Heart of Jesus church all within a fifteen to twenty minute walk of either train station. The city has two stations, Rēzekne 1 and Rēzekne 2, both fairly central; local buses connect outlying neighbourhoods but are rarely needed by short-stay visitors.

For onward travel, Rēzekne remains a genuine rail hub: regular trains run to Riga (around three to four hours) and other Latgale towns. Long-distance buses operated from the central bus station cover the same routes plus villages not served by rail, often faster and cheaper for short hops like Ludza (about 25 km) or Gulbene. Taxis are available in town for reaching Rāzna National Park and other rural attractions not directly served by public transport; renting a car is the most flexible way to explore the lakes and nature reserves of the wider Latgale countryside.

What should you eat?

Latgalian food leans heartier and more rustic than cooking elsewhere in Latvia, reflecting the region's lake-and-forest landscape and its historical mix of Latvian, Russian, and Polish influences. Look for potato-based dishes, rye bread served with nearly every meal, and generous use of dill, sour cream, and smoked fish from the region's many lakes.

Freshwater fish, especially from Lake Rāzna, appears smoked or fried in local cafés, often alongside boiled potatoes and pickled vegetables. Bacon-and-onion rye pastries (speķa pīrāgi) are a common snack throughout Latvia but are made with particular pride in Latgale, and mushroom soup or stewed mushrooms feature heavily in autumn, when forest foraging is a genuine local pastime rather than a novelty.

Visitors should try the simple, unpretentious cafés around the central market rather than expect a fine dining scene; Rēzekne's food culture is about honest, seasonal ingredients rather than presentation.

What is the culture like?

Rēzekne hosts several events tied to Latgalian identity and Catholic tradition, since the region, unlike much of Lutheran-leaning western Latvia, remains predominantly Catholic. The Assumption of Mary pilgrimage in mid August draws visitors to the region's churches, and midsummer's Jāņi celebrations in late June are observed with the bonfires, wreath making, and singing traditional across Latvia.

The city is also a centre for Latgalian ceramics, a distinctive local craft tradition of dark, glazed pottery, and visitors can find workshops and small galleries selling handmade pieces. Folk music and choral singing, both deeply rooted in Latvian culture generally, are especially strong here, with local ensembles performing at regional festivals through the summer.
