Why visit Staicele?
Staicele is a riverside town in Limbažu Municipality in northern Latvia, situated along the banks of the Salaca River within the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve, roughly 15 km south of the Estonian border. With a population of approximately 1,000 residents, the town originated in 1897 around a newly founded paper mill and is widely known across Latvia as the "City of Storks" due to its large nesting white stork population and regional bird conservation traditions.
Travelers visit Staicele primarily for water tourism on the Salaca River, Livonian cultural history, and rural outdoor recreation. The river forms a major corridor for kayaking, canoeing, and salmon angling, set against forested banks and Devonian red sandstone formations. The town center retains early 20th-century wooden architecture, historic paper mill structures, and references to the ancient Livonian people who once inhabited this region.
Staicele has a humid continental climate (Köppen Dfb). Summers (June to August) are mild to warm, with average daytime temperatures of 18°C to 23°C. Winters (December to February) are cold and snowy, with temperatures averaging −2°C to −8°C. Annual precipitation averages around 650 to 700 mm, with July and August recording the highest rainfall.
