Dobeles novads (Dobele Municipality) sits in the heart of Zemgale, the flat, exceptionally fertile farming region of southern Latvia that rolls toward the Lithuanian border. Following Latvia's 2021 administrative reform, the municipality was enlarged to absorb the former Auce and Tērvete districts, so today it stretches across a broad swathe of arable plain, river valleys, and pockets of old forest, with the town of Dobele on the Bērze River as its administrative and cultural centre. This is classic Zemgale country: big skies, grain fields, dairy farms, and quiet provincial towns rather than dramatic relief.
The municipality's character is shaped by agriculture and horticulture more than tourism, but that same rural setting is its draw. Dobele itself is widely known across Latvia as the "city of lilacs," thanks to the long-running fruit and ornamental breeding work associated with horticulturist Pēteris Upītis and the Latvian institute of fruit-growing based here. The ruins of the Livonian Order's Dobele Castle overlook the Bērze, anchoring a small but real layer of medieval history that connects the area to the wider Semigallian (Zemgaļu) past.
For travellers, Dobeles novads works best as a day-trip belt from Riga or Jelgava, or as a slow, green detour for anyone driving between Riga and the Lithuanian border. Its appeal lies in nature parks, hillfort archaeology, garden and orchard heritage, and an unhurried small-town rhythm.
When is the best time to visit?
Late spring is the signature season. Lilac and fruit-tree blossom typically peaks in May, and Dobele's lilac heritage makes this the most atmospheric time to come; orchards and ornamental collections are at their best. Summer (June–August) brings the warmest, longest days, the busiest period for Tērvete Nature Park, and the bulk of local outdoor festivals.
September–October offers autumn colour in the forests and the apple/harvest season across the surrounding farmland, which suits orchard visits. Winters are cold, grey, and quiet, with short days; expect snow and minimal tourist infrastructure outside the main nature park, which markets a seasonal winter/Christmas programme.

WhatsAppHow do you get around?
A car is by far the most practical way to explore Dobeles novads, since the highlights — nature parks, forests, hillforts, and small towns — are spread across rural roads where public transport is thin. Dobele lies roughly 70 km southwest of Riga and about 25–30 km west of Jelgava, the main Zemgale hub, both reachable on good main roads.
Dobele is served by regional bus connections to Riga, Jelgava, and nearby towns, run by Latvia's intercity coach network; buses are the main public option for reaching the town itself. Within the municipality, getting between Dobele, Auce, and Tērvete by bus is possible but infrequent, so timing matters. Distances are short — most points of interest are within a 20–40 km radius of Dobele — making self-driving or cycling on quiet country roads pleasant in good weather. Taxis exist in Dobele but should not be relied on for rural sightseeing.
Where should you go?
- Dobele — the municipality's main town, known as the "city of lilacs" for its celebrated fruit and ornamental breeding heritage, with ruins of a Livonian Order castle overlooking the Bērze River.
- Auce — a small western town with a historic manor complex and quiet rural character, serving as a gateway to the forests and farmland on the Zemgale–Kurzeme border.
- Tērvete — best known for Tērvete Nature Park, one of Latvia's most beloved family destinations, with carved wooden fairy-tale figures threading through tall pine forest and an ancient Semigallian hillfort site.
- Bērziņi — a quiet village in the heart of the Zemgale plain, surrounded by the flat farmland and orchards that define this agricultural heartland.
- Annenieki — a small rural centre on the western edge of the municipality, offering access to the wooded landscapes between Dobele and the Lithuanian border.

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
Dobeles novads eats like rural Zemgale, Latvia's breadbasket: hearty, grain- and dairy-forward home cooking. Expect dark rye bread, grey peas with bacon (pelēkie zirņi ar speķi), barley and potato dishes, curd cheese (biezpiens), and sour-cream-rich preparations. Local farms supply dairy, honey, and seasonal vegetables, and the area's strong horticultural tradition means apples, plums, cherries, and berries — fresh in season and as jams, juices, and ciders — are a regional point of pride.
In town, dining is centred on a handful of cafés and family restaurants serving Latvian staples and lunch menus (pusdienas) at modest prices, generally in the single-digit to low-teens euro range per main. Tērvete Nature Park and roadside stops cater to day visitors with simple Latvian fare. Vegetarians can manage with curd, potato, mushroom, and grain dishes, though dedicated meat-free menus are limited outside the larger towns.
What is the culture like?
Culturally, the municipality leans on its horticultural and Semigallian heritage and the broad Latvian calendar of seasonal celebrations. Jāņi (Midsummer, around 23–24 June) is the biggest event of the year, as everywhere in Latvia, marked with bonfires, oak-leaf wreaths, cheese, and song in towns and on farms. Latvia's deep choral and folk-song tradition runs through local culture, feeding into the national Song and Dance Celebration cycle.
The lilac and fruit-breeding legacy gives Dobele a distinctive identity expressed through spring blossom and garden events, and Tērvete's wooden folk-tale sculpture park reflects a strong local tradition of woodcraft and storytelling. Craft fairs, harvest markets, and the Christmas/Advent season round out the year.

WhatsAppWhat are the standout experiences?
- Tērvete Nature Park — one of Latvia's best-loved family destinations: tall pine forest threaded with carved wooden fairy-tale figures (drawing on writer Anna Brigadere's tales), nature trails, and an ancient Semigallian hillfort site recalling the medieval Zemgaļu resistance.
- Pokaiņi Forest — an atmospheric forest near Dobele known for its enigmatic piles of stones, promoted as a mystical/energy site and laced with walking trails; a quietly intriguing half-day walk.
- Dobele Castle ruins — the remains of the Livonian Order castle above the Bērze River, an open-air anchor for the town's medieval history and a venue for seasonal events.
- Lilac and fruit-garden heritage — touring Dobele's celebrated lilac and fruit-breeding collections in blossom season, the experience most tied to the town's "city of lilacs" identity.
- Slow Zemgale countryside touring — driving or cycling the flat farmland between Dobele, Tērvete, and Auce, stopping at farms, manors, and rural churches for an unhurried taste of Latvia's agricultural heartland.
