Trepča Mining Complex
Mitrovica District, Kosovo
Why visit Trepča Mining Complex?
The Trepča Mining Complex (Albanian: Trepça; Serbian: Трепча) is a vast industrial site near Mitrovica, northern Kosovo, that was once one of the largest lead and zinc mining and smelting operations in Europe. The complex stretches across several sites in the Ibar River valley, with the main processing facilities located in the village of Stari Trg (Albanian: Tërg i Vjetër), about 10 km west of Mitrovica.
At its peak during the Yugoslav era, Trepča employed over 20,000 workers and produced a significant proportion of Europe's lead and zinc. The complex includes underground mines, smelters, processing plants, and associated infrastructure. Today, mining continues on a reduced scale, and the site is of interest for its industrial heritage and the extraordinary underground spaces created by decades of mining.
Trepča is primarily an industrial site rather than a tourist destination. Visits are typically arranged through local guides or organisations, and access to the underground mines may be limited. The surrounding landscape is scarred by mining activity but also has a stark beauty. The best time to visit is spring through autumn, when access roads are clear.
