Siaya

Siaya County lies in western Kenya, on the shores of Lake Victoria's Winam Gulf. It is part of the former Nyanza Province and is the heartland of the Luo people, Kenya's second-largest ethnic group. The county is predominantly agricultural and lakeside, with fishing and farming as the main economic activities.

Siaya town is the county capital. Bondo is the largest town and the birthplace of Barack Obama Sr., father of former US President Barack Obama. The county offers lakeside scenery, Luo cultural experiences, and a relaxed pace of life.

The dry months of June to September and January to February are best. The long rains (March–May) and short rains (October–November) bring heavy downpours.

Siaya is connected to Kisumu (about 70 km) and Busia by road. Matatus run from Kisumu to Siaya, Bondo, Ugunja, Yala, and other towns. Boda-bodas are the main local transport.

The Luo people have a rich oral tradition, music (benga), and storytelling culture. Bondo and Kogelo hold significance as the ancestral home of the Obama family. Traditional Luo ceremonies and community gatherings remain vibrant.
