Nyeri County lies at the base of Mount Kenya's south-western slopes, a fertile highland region of rolling hills, forests, and tea plantations. Nyeri town is a historic colonial-era settlement and a gateway to both Mount Kenya National Park and the Aberdare Range. The county is predominantly Kikuyu and was the centre of the Mau Mau independence struggle.
The county is famous for its connection to Baden-Powell (the founder of Scouting, who retired and died here), its stunning views of Mount Kenya, and its productive agricultural lands. Karatina and Othaya are major market towns. The Nyeri area offers excellent hiking, wildlife viewing, and Kenyan history.
When to Visit
The dry months of January–March and June–September are best for trekking and outdoor activities. The long rains (March–May) and short rains (October–November) are heavy but the landscape turns lush.
