Aitong
Narok, Kenya
Why visit Aitong?
Aitong is a Maasai pastoral settlement located in northern Narok County, 101 km southwest of Narok town and 243 km west of Nairobi. Sitting at an altitude of approximately 1,800 meters (5,900 feet) on the edge of the Rift Valley plateau, it acts as the primary administrative and trade center for northern Maasai Mara conservancies.
The town serves as the operational headquarters of Mara North Conservancy, a 29,000-hectare (71,000-acre) private wildlife area established in 2009. Formed through a partnership between more than 800 Maasai landowners and 12 safari lodge operators, Mara North operates on a low-density tourism model that limits vehicle numbers per sighting. Wildlife populations within the conservancy include lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, and over 450 bird species, with wildebeest and zebra herds passing through during the annual migration.
Daytime temperatures in Aitong average between 26°C and 29°C (79°F–84°F) year-round, while nights cool down to 14°C–16°C (57°F–61°F). The area experiences two distinct rainy periods: the long rains from April to May and the short rains from November to December.
