Overview

Narok County stretches from the Loita Plains in the north to the Tanzanian border in the south, encompassing the world-famous Maasai Mara National Reserve. The county is the heartland of Maasai culture, where the semi-nomadic Maasai people maintain their traditions alongside one of Africa's greatest wildlife ecosystems.

The Maasai Mara, an extension of Tanzania's Serengeti ecosystem, hosts the Great Migration of wildebeest and zebra (July–October), one of the world's most spectacular wildlife events. The county capital, Narok town, is a bustling market centre and the main gateway to the Mara. The landscape ranges from open savannah and acacia woodland to the Loita Hills and the volcanic Suswa area.

When to Visit

The best time for wildlife viewing is July–October (the Great Migration) and January–February (calving season). The dry months (June–October and January–March) offer the best game viewing. The long rains (March–May) and short rains (November) can make roads difficult.

Tell us your dates and we'll shape a Narok route around them.
