Mombasa County is Kenya's smallest county by land area but its second-most populous city and the country's primary port. Centred on Mombasa Island and extending onto the surrounding mainland, it is the heart of Kenya's coastal tourism. The city is one of the oldest in sub-Saharan Africa, with a history spanning more than a millennium as a Swahili trading port connecting Africa to Arabia, India, and beyond.
The county comprises four main divisions: Mvita (the historic island core), Kisauni (the north coast with its famous beaches), Likoni (the south coast), and Changamwe (the industrial gateway housing Moi International Airport). Fort Jesus, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the winding alleys of the Old Town preserve Mombasa's rich Swahili and Portuguese heritage. Its white-sand beaches, coral reefs, and warm Indian Ocean waters make it Kenya's premier beach destination.
When to Visit
The best weather is from December to March and July to October, when it is dry and sunny. The long rains fall from April to June, and the short rains from October to November. Mombasa is warm year-round, with average highs of 30–33°C. The busiest tourist season is December–February and July–August.

WhatsAppGetting Around
Mombasa is well connected by air (Moi International Airport), rail (the modern SGR railway to Nairobi, about 5 hours), and road. Within the county, matatus operate on all major routes. The Likoni Ferry connects the island to the south coast (free for pedestrians). Tuk-tuks and taxis are plentiful for short trips, and ride-hailing apps like Uber operate in the city. Nyali Bridge connects the island to the north coast, and Makupa Bridge to the mainland west.

WhatsAppCuisine
Coastal Swahili cuisine is the star, blending African, Arab, and Indian influences. Signature dishes include biryani, pilau, viazi karai (fried potato balls), mahamri (coconut doughnuts), and fresh seafood grilled with coconut and spices. Nyama choma and ugali are widely available. Street food thrives: samosas, bhajias, and mishkaki (skewered meat). For dessert, kaimati (sweet fried dumplings in syrup) is a local favourite.
Culture & Festivals
Mombasa's culture is a Swahili, Arab, Indian, and African fusion. The Mombasa Carnival (November) features parades, music, and dance. The Lamu Cultural Festival is also celebrated. Islamic festivals like Eid are widely observed. The Old Town and Fort Jesus are cultural treasures, reflecting centuries of trade and conquest. Local crafts include kikoy (woven cotton cloth), woodcarving, and silver jewellery.
