Photography coming soonOverview
Meru County lies on the north-eastern slopes of Mount Kenya, spreading from the fertile highland farmlands down to the dry savannah of the east. Its capital, Meru town, is a busy commercial hub known for its vibrant markets and as a gateway to Meru National Park. The county is primarily inhabited by the Meru people, who are renowned for their agricultural prowess and traditions.
The landscape is exceptionally varied: cool green hills covered in tea, coffee, and banana plantations rise towards the Mount Kenya massif, while the lowlands give way to acacia bushland and the Tana River basin. Meru National Park, made famous by Elsa the lioness of Born Free, offers excellent game viewing without the crowds of the Maasai Mara.
When to Visit
The dry seasons (June–September and January–March) are best for wildlife viewing in Meru National Park. The wettest months are April–May (long rains) and October–December (short rains). In the highlands around Meru town, the climate is mild year-round, with cooler evenings.
