Marsabit County is a vast, rugged region in northern Kenya, stretching from the shores of Lake Turkana to the Ethiopian border. Its geography is defined by the Marsabit Mountain — a forested volcanic rise that stands like a green island above the surrounding arid plains. The county is sparsely populated, home to a mix of Cushitic and Nilotic peoples including the Borana, Gabra, Rendille, and Samburu.
The county offers some of Kenya's most remote and extraordinary landscapes: the jade waters of Lake Turkana, the Chalbi Desert's cracked salt flats, and the volcanic craters of Marsabit National Park. Sibiloi National Park, on the shores of Lake Turkana, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its fossil deposits. This is a destination for adventurous travellers seeking true wilderness.
When to Visit
The dry months of June to October and January to March are most practical for travel, when roads are passable and wildlife concentrates around water sources. The region receives very low rainfall, with brief wet periods in April–May and November. Temperatures are high year-round in the lowlands, while Marsabit town is cooler due to its elevation.

WhatsAppGetting Around
Distances are vast and roads are mostly unpaved. The A2 highway runs through the county, connecting Isiolo to Moyale and the Ethiopian border. Buses and matatus run from Isiolo to Marsabit and Moyale, and a matatu connects Loiyangalani on Lake Turkana to Marsabit (8–10 hours, Ksh 1500). Within towns, boda-bodas (motorcycle taxis) are the main local transport. A 4WD vehicle is essential for visiting parks and remote areas.

WhatsAppCuisine
The cuisine reflects the pastoralist cultures. Camel milk and goat meat are staples, often consumed fresh or fermented. Nyama choma (roasted meat) is widespread. In Marsabit town, small restaurants serve ugali (cornmeal porridge), sukuma wiki (kale), and chapati. Along Lake Turkana, fresh Nile perch and tilapia are grilled or fried. Camel milk tea is a local specialty.
Culture & Festivals
The county is a mosaic of peoples: Borana and Gabra (Cushitic) in the lowlands, Rendille around Mount Marsabit, and Samburu in the south. The El Molo, Kenya's smallest ethnic group, live around Lake Turkana. Traditional ceremonies involve livestock blessings, age-set initiations, and dances. The Lake Turkana Cultural Festival (Loiyangalani) celebrates the region's eight ethnic groups with music, dance, and crafts.
