Overview

Mandera County is Kenya's north-easternmost county, bordering Ethiopia to the north and Somalia to the east. Its capital and largest town is Mandera. The county is characterised by arid and semi-arid terrain, with the Daua River providing a lifeline through an otherwise dry landscape. Most inhabitants are ethnic Somali, and the county's culture, language, and economy are closely tied to the Horn of Africa region.

Livestock trade dominates the economy, with camel, goat, and sheep herding central to local life. The county has historically been remote and underserved, but its position at the convergence of three countries gives it a unique cross-border character. Malka Mari National Park, along the Daua River, offers a semi-arid wilderness experience with riparian woodlands and endemic plant species.

When to Visit

The best time to visit is during the cooler dry months from June to October and January to February. Temperatures are consistently hot, often exceeding 30°C during the day. The long rains (March–May) and short rains (October–November) bring minimal precipitation but can make unpaved roads difficult to navigate. Droughts are not uncommon.

Getting Around

Roads within Mandera are largely unpaved and can be rough, especially after rains. Matatus (minibuses) and boda-bodas (motorcycle taxis) are the primary means of local transport. Mandera Airport (NDE) offers flights from Nairobi, providing the most practical connection to the rest of Kenya. From the airstrip, taxis or arranged transport are needed to reach towns. The main town of Mandera and settlements like El Wak, Rhamu, and Takaba are connected by dusty roads traversable by 4WD vehicles.

Cuisine

Somali cuisine dominates Mandera. Fresh camel milk is a staple drink, often consumed with camel meat or goat. Nyama choma (roasted meat) is popular, as are Somali-style rice dishes spiced with cardamom and cloves, often served with goat or camel meat. Flatbreads like lahoh (Somali pancake) are eaten at breakfast. Tea with spices and plenty of sugar is a daily ritual.

Culture & Festivals

The county is predominantly Somali, with Islamic traditions shaping daily life and festivals. Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are the most important celebrations, marked by communal prayers, feasting, and livestock sacrifices.
