Makueni County lies in Kenya's arid and semi-arid eastern region, spanning about 8,000 km² across six sub-counties (Makueni, Mbooni, Kaiti, Kibwezi East, Kibwezi West, and Kilome), and is home to Akamba farming and herding communities in its northern and eastern areas. The county contains the Chyulu Hills, a roughly 100 km volcanic range whose highest peak reaches 2,188 m; volcanism here began about 1.4 million years ago and the range's most recent eruptions occurred in 1856. The eastern flank of the hills is protected as Chyulu Hills National Park (est. 1983), part of the wider Tsavo conservation area alongside Tsavo West, Tsavo East, and Kibwezi Forest, with its main gate at Kibwezi in Makueni. The park's Leviathan Cave, at roughly 11 km, is among the longest lava-tube caves in Africa, and the hills' lower grassland gives way above about 1,800 m to montane forest supporting elephant, buffalo, giraffe, and both lion and leopard populations.
