Lamu

Lamu County covers the northern Kenyan coast and the Lamu Archipelago, a chain of islands including Lamu, Manda, Pate, and Kiwayu roughly 340 km by road northeast of Mombasa. Its centrepiece, Lamu Old Town on Lamu Island, is the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa, continuously inhabited for over 700 years and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. Built in coral stone and mangrove timber, the town's narrow streets, inner courtyards, and elaborately carved wooden doors reflect a fusion of Swahili, Arab, Persian, Indian, and European influences built up over centuries of Indian Ocean trade. There are no motor vehicles on Lamu Island — donkeys and handcarts still move goods through its alleyways — and the town has long been a centre for Islamic and Swahili scholarship, hosting Muslim religious festivals since the 19th century.

The dry months of January to March and June to September offer the best conditions for travel. The long rains fall from April to June and the short rains from October to November.

Matatus and buses connect the main towns within the county. Paved roads serve the county capital and major routes. Rural roads may require a 4WD in the wet season.
