Baricho
Kirinyaga, Kenya
Why visit Baricho?
Baricho is an agricultural market town in the Ndia constituency of Kirinyaga County, located along the southern slopes of Mount Kenya at an elevation of approximately 1,370 meters. The settlement functions primarily as a trading and supply center for surrounding smallholder farming communities cultivating Arabica coffee, tea, bananas, sweet potatoes, and macadamia nuts on fertile volcanic soil. It lies close to the administrative boundary between Kirinyaga and Nyeri counties, with the Ragati River flowing through the neighboring valleys.
Visitors typically reach Baricho while traveling between regional centers such as Kagio, Sagana, and Karatina, or to explore local river valleys, coffee wet mills, and foothill trails. The town features a straightforward, rural Kenyan market atmosphere where daily activity centers on produce stalls, hardware shops, tea rooms, and matatu stages.
The climate is tropical highland, moderated by elevation. Daytime temperatures generally hover between 20°C and 28°C (68°F–82°F), while nighttime temperatures drop to 12°C to 16°C (54°F–61°F). The area experiences two distinct rainy seasons: the long rains from late March to May, and the short rains from October through December.

By Bus
Direct 14-seater matatus connect Nairobi to Kagio and Baricho, departing from the Tea Room and Accra Road termini in Nairobi's Central Business District. Operators including Kukena Sacco, 2NK Sacco, and 4NTE run services every 15 to 30 minutes throughout the day. The 120 km trip takes 2 to 2.5 hours via the Thika Superhighway and costs Ksh 400 to Ksh 600 ($3.10 to $4.60 USD) one way. Alternatively, board any Nairobi-to-Karatina or Nairobi-to-Kerugoya matatu, alight along the A2 highway at Kibirigwi or Sagana, and take a local connecting matatu to Baricho for Ksh 50 to Ksh 100 ($0.40 to $0.75 USD, 15 minutes).
By Train
No train service runs directly into Baricho. Kenya Railways operates the Nairobi–Nanyuki commuter passenger train on Fridays and Sundays, stopping at Sagana Station (17 km southwest) and Karatina Station (21 km northwest). The rail journey from Nairobi Central Railway Station to Sagana takes roughly 3.5 to 4 hours, costing Ksh 200 ($1.55 USD) in Economy Class and Ksh 1,000 ($7.70 USD) in First Class. From either Sagana or Karatina station, transfer to Baricho via local matatu or taxi.
By Car
Baricho is situated roughly 120 km north-northeast of Nairobi. From Nairobi, take the Thika Superhighway (A2) north through Thika, Kenol, and Makuyu to Sagana (approximately 100 km). Near Sagana or just past Kibirigwi, turn east onto paved regional connector roads (Route C74) leading through Kagio toward Baricho. The drive follows paved roads the entire way and takes 2 to 2.5 hours depending on Nairobi traffic. A standard 2WD saloon car is adequate for paved routes, though a high-clearance vehicle is recommended for dirt tracks leading to farm cooperatives and waterfalls during wet periods.
By Air
No air service operates in Baricho. The nearest international gateway is Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (IATA: NBO) in Nairobi, 135 km south (about 2.5 hours by road), served by major international airlines. Wilson Airport (IATA: WIL) in Nairobi, 125 km south, operates domestic scheduled flights across Kenya. Nanyuki Airstrip (IATA: NYK), 85 km north, handles scheduled flights from Wilson Airport via SafariLink and AirKenya (45 minutes flight time), from where passengers can take a taxi south through Karatina to Baricho.
The central commercial strip of Baricho is small enough to explore on foot. For journeys to outlying coffee processing stations, waterfalls, and adjacent villages, motorcycle taxis (boda-bodas) operate from main road intersections, charging Ksh 50 to Ksh 100 ($0.40 to $0.75 USD) for short rides and Ksh 150 to Ksh 250 ($1.15 to $1.90 USD) for longer runs to rural sites. Shared 14-seater matatus operate frequently along the paved C74 road linking Baricho with Kagio, Kibirigwi, and Karatina for Ksh 50 to Ksh 100 ($0.40 to $0.75 USD). App-based ride services such as Uber and Bolt do not operate in Baricho; private saloon taxis must be arranged directly with local drivers in town or in Kagio.
