Overview

Bomet County lies in the southern Rift Valley highlands of Kenya, a region of rolling green hills, tea plantations, and the dramatic Kipsigis escarpment. The county is named after its capital town, Bomet, and is the heartland of the Kipsigis people, a subgroup of the Kalenjin community. Agriculture dominates: tea estates cover the western hills, while maize, pyrethrum, and dairy farming fill the eastern highlands. It is not a major tourist destination, but its cool climate, scenic landscapes, and traditional culture offer an off-the-beaten-path experience for travellers passing through the southern Rift.

When to Visit

The highland climate is temperate year-round, with the heaviest rains from April to June and October to December. The driest and most pleasant months are January to March and June to September. The Bomet area is green and lush year-round; road conditions deteriorate during the long rains.

Getting Around

Public transport in Bomet County is served by matatus linking the main towns — Bomet, Sotik, Longisa, and Mulot. The main tarmac road runs from Kericho through Bomet and on to Narok and the Maasai Mara. Side roads to rural centres are unpaved and can be slippery in the wet season. A 4WD is recommended for exploring beyond the main towns.

Cuisine

Kipsigis cuisine centres on ugali, mursik (fermented milk), and nyama choma. The tea-growing areas produce some of Kenya's best black tea, and local markets sell fresh dairy products, maize, and vegetables. Bomet town has a range of small restaurants serving Kenyan staples.

Culture & Festivals

The county is predominantly Kipsigis, part of the larger Kalenjin community. Traditional ceremonies, including wedding dances (koito) and initiation ceremonies, are still practised. The annual Bomet Agricultural Show showcases local farming produce and livestock. Sports, particularly athletics, are a point of pride — the region has produced many of Kenya's champion runners.
