Overview

Mādabā is a governorate in central-western Jordan, famous for its Byzantine-era mosaics — particularly the 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land in St. George's Church. The governorate stretches from the highlands east of the Dead Sea down to the Dead Sea shore, and includes Mount Nebo, where Moses is said to have viewed the Promised Land. It is one of Jordan's most historically rich regions.

The town of Madaba is a relaxed, Christian-majority community 30 km southwest of Amman. The surrounding governorate includes the hot springs of Ma'in, the ancient site of Dhiban (Biblical Dibon), and Mukawir (Machaerus), the hilltop fortress where John the Baptist was reportedly beheaded. The climate is Mediterranean in the highlands: warm dry summers (28–33 °C) and cool rainy winters (5–12 °C), with the Dead Sea shore significantly hotter.

When to Visit

Spring (March–May) is ideal, with green landscapes and temperatures of 15–25 °C. Autumn (September–November) is also excellent. Summers are hot but dry. Winter brings rain and occasional snow to the highlands. Mount Nebo is best visited in clear weather for the panoramic views.
