Overview

Jarash (Jerash) is a small governorate in northern Jordan, centred on the world-famous Roman ruins of Jerash — one of the best-preserved provincial Roman cities anywhere. The governorate is predominantly agricultural, with rolling hills, olive groves, and small villages. Its compact size makes it easy to explore as a day trip from Amman or as part of a northern Jordan itinerary.

The region's identity is inseparable from the ancient city of Gerasa (modern Jerash), whose colonnaded streets, temples, theatres, and hippodrome draw visitors from around the world. Beyond the ruins, the governorate offers quiet rural landscapes and traditional Jordanian village life. The climate is Mediterranean in the highlands: warm dry summers (28–33 °C) and cool rainy winters (5–12 °C).

When to Visit

Spring (March–May) is the best time, with green hills and comfortable temperatures (15–25 °C). Autumn (September–November) is also excellent. The Jerash Festival of Culture and Arts (June–July) is a major draw, with performances in the ancient theatres. Summers are hot but dry. Winter brings rain and cold nights.

Getting Around

Jerash is 48 km north of Amman (45 min by car or servees taxi, 1–2 JD). The town is small and walkable. Servees taxis connect Jerash with Irbid (40 min north) and Ajloun (20 min west). A rental car is useful for exploring the wider governorate. The Roman site is on the eastern edge of town, walkable from the centre.

Local specialties include olive oil, za'atar, and locally grown vegetables. The governorate's agricultural character means fresh produce is abundant. Simple but good meals are available at village restaurants throughout the area.
