Umm Qais
Irbid, Jordan
Why visit Umm Qais?
Umm Qais (ancient Gadara) is a village in Irbid Governorate built atop and around the ruins of a major Decapolis city. The site offers some of the most spectacular panoramic views in Jordan, overlooking the Sea of Galilee (Lake Tiberias), the Golan Heights, the Jordan Valley, and the Yarmouk River gorge. The ruins include a Roman theatre, colonnaded street, basilica, and Ottoman-era village buildings.
Gadara was one of the ten cities of the Decapolis, a league of Greco-Roman cities. It was known as a centre of philosophy and culture. The black basalt ruins contrast with the surrounding green agricultural land. The climate is Mediterranean: warm dry summers (28–33 °C) and cool rainy winters (5–12 °C).
