Why visit Otawara?

Otawara (大田原市) is a city in northeastern Tochigi Prefecture, located along the Naka River at the foot of the Nasu Highlands. It is known for the historic Oya Stone (大谷石) quarries — a soft volcanic tuff used in many of Japan's most famous structures, including parts of Nikko Toshogu Shrine and Frank Lloyd Wright's Imperial Hotel.

The city has a relaxed provincial character with a compact historic core, a castle ruin, and several well-preserved traditional buildings. Its location near the Nasu Highlands makes it a convenient stop between Tokyo and the northern volcano region. The climate features hot humid summers and cold winters, with occasional snow from the nearby mountains.
