Why visit Yoshino-Kumano National Park?

Yoshino-Kumano National Park is a vast national park spanning Nara, Mie, and Wakayama prefectures in the Kii Peninsula of Japan. Established in 1936, it encompasses the sacred Yoshino Mountains, the Kumano Sanzan (three grand shrines), the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes, and the rugged coastline of the Kumano Sea. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage site as part of the "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range," and has been a centre of mountain worship for over a millennium.

How do you get there?

Access points vary by region. In Mie, the northern part is reachable from Owase on the JR Kisei Main Line. From Nara, buses run to Yoshino and the Omine Okugakemichi trailheads. From Wakayama, the Kumano region is accessible via JR Kisei Main Line to Kii-Tanabe or Shingu. By car, the park spans a large area accessible via the Ise Expressway and Route 42.

A car is essential for connecting the park's dispersed regions. Local buses and infrequent trains serve some sections of the Kumano Kodo and the Yoshino area. The hiking routes themselves are the primary mode of travel within the protected zones.

What are the things to do?
