Brown's Town
Saint Ann, Jamaica
Why visit Brown's Town?
Brown's Town is an inland commercial market town situated in the Dry Harbour Mountains of Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica, approximately 14 kilometres south of the northern coast. Established in the early 19th century by Irish landowner Hamilton Brown, the settlement initially carried the name Hamilton Town. Following the abolition of slavery in 1838, the town grew into a primary trading center for independent post-emancipation settlements, including Sturge Town, Buxton, and Goshen.
Today, the town functions as an agricultural trading hub for Saint Ann Parish and a regional educational center. It houses historic institutions such as York Castle High School (established in 1876) and St. Hilda's Diocesan High School (established in 1906). Visitors travel to Brown's Town to experience a working rural Jamaican market town, sample local mountain produce, and explore 19th-century post-emancipation settlements.
The climate is tropical, modified by its inland elevation of roughly 350 metres above sea level. Daily average temperatures range from 24°C to 30°C (75°F to 86°F). Higher elevation brings cooler evening temperatures than coastal resort areas, alongside frequent afternoon showers, particularly during the May–June and October–November rainy periods.
