Afula
Ash Shamali, Israel
Why visit Afula?
Afula is a medium-sized town in northern Israel and the largest city in the Jezreel Valley, serving as the regional capital. Dating back at least to the 11th century (and possibly several thousand more years), Afula remained a small village until it became a logistics node with the Jezreel Valley railway inaugurated in 1904. The town was bought in 1925 by the American Zionist Commonwealth as part of the Sursock Purchase, the largest Jewish land acquisition during Mandatory Palestine.
Over the following decades Afula saw a large influx of Jewish immigrants and has grown into a modern, well-developed town. However, it lacks major tourist sights and primarily serves as a transport hub and gateway to the Jezreel Valley region. The climate is hot and semi-arid in summer, mild in winter.
