Falcarragh
Ulster, Ireland
Why visit Falcarragh?
Falcarragh is a destination in Ulster, Ireland. Falcarragh (Irish: An Fál Carrach) is a market village in the Donegal Gaeltacht, set between the Atlantic coast and the base of Muckish Mountain. It has a strong Irish-speaking tradition and a lively community with good traditional music sessions. The village serves as a good base for climbing Muckish and exploring the spectacular Rosguill Peninsula and the coast road to Dunfanaghy.

By Car
The most practical way to reach Falcarragh is by car. Ulster (IE-U) is best explored with your own transport, as public connections are limited. The main roads are the N15 (Sligo–Donegal–Letterkenny), N13 (Letterkenny–Stranorlar), N14 (Letterkenny–Lifford), and N2 (Dublin–Monaghan–Letterkenny), all of which are good quality. Minor roads in Donegal are often narrow and winding — allow extra travel time.
By Train
There is no rail service within Ulster (IE-U). The nearest train stations are in Sligo (for Donegal) and Dundalk/Drogheda (for Cavan and Monaghan), where connecting buses are available. Irish Rail operates services to these stations from Dublin Connolly and Dublin Heuston.
By Bus
Bus Éireann operates services from Dublin and other major cities to Letterkenny, Donegal Town, Cavan, and Monaghan. Local bus services connect smaller towns but are infrequent, especially on Sundays. Advance route planning is essential, particularly for reaching remote coastal areas.
By Air
Donegal Airport (CFN) at Carrickfinn has flights from Dublin operated by Aer Lingus Regional. Ireland West Airport Knock (NOC) in County Mayo is an alternative for visitors to south Donegal. Dublin Airport (DUB) is about 2–2.5 hours' drive from Cavan and Monaghan.
Falcarragh is compact enough to explore on foot. For exploring the surrounding countryside and nearby attractions, a car is essential. The region's public transport network is limited, so advance planning is necessary for bus-based travel. In Donegal, the stunning coastal scenery rewards drivers willing to take the slower, more scenic routes.

Cloughaneely Stone , mounted on a plinth near the golf course, is in legend the place where - och, just invent your own story, it'll surely be as good, and you need the practice for the Donegal art of story-weaving. Ray Church is a medieval ruin 2.5 km east of Falcarragh. Four 7th-century abbotts of Iona got their career start here. The High Cross is from the 8th century: it was broken in a storm circa 1750 but repaired in the 1970s. Cromwell in the previous century wrecked the church then, unsated, massacred the congregation.
Dunfanaghy ( Dún Fionnachaidh ) is a village on the coast of Sheephaven Bay. Clondehorky Old Church, now ruined, is from the 17th century. The Workhouse (daily 10AM-5PM) depicts village life, or loss of it, d
... arrived at a place called Falcarrow in your Lordship’s See (about five miles distant from Dunfanaghy) where I then, pursuant to advertisement, proposed holding the Court as I twice before had, but was immediately on my arrival surrounded by upwards of 150 to 300 men who had assembled merely for the purpose of preventing me from holding any Court and threatened my life if I would. Their measures I was obliged to comply with.

Tramore is the long, long sandy beach. The name means "big beach" so it's a very common placename (such as Tramore in Waterford, the opposite end of the country). There are several access points but no road, so it will involve a tramp through the sandhills. It's exposed to the Atlantic with strong currents, so bathing is not recommended - head for sheltered beaches such as Killahoey or Marble Strand by Dunfanaghy.
