Youghal is a destination in Munster, Ireland.

Youghal (Eochail) is a historic walled town at the mouth of the River Blackwater in County Cork. Its medieval walls, clock tower, and waterfront have featured in numerous film and TV productions, including 'The Last September' and some scenes from 'Game of Thrones'. The town has a long sandy beach and a well-preserved Tudor and Elizabethan architectural heritage.

How do you get there?

The most practical way to reach Youghal is by car, with good road connections from the surrounding area. Regional bus services may also serve the town, though schedules can be limited on weekends. The nearest airport is typically Shannon (SNN) or Ireland West Airport Knock (NOC), depending on the specific location.

Youghal is compact enough to explore on foot. For exploring the surrounding countryside and nearby attractions, a car or bicycle is recommended.

Mall Arts Centre on The Mall just south of the harbour has various live events.

Boat trips sail up the river.

Aura Leisure Centre on the beach has a gym and swimming pool. It's next to Claycastle Pitch and Putt.

Youghal Golf Club is south of town centre. The Old Course is 5640 m, par 70 and the New Course (blue tees) is 5976 m, par 71.

Go to the dogs at Youghal Greyhound Stadium , near the amusement arcade on Upper Strand. Racing is M W from 6:30PM, with trials other nights.

Where to eat?

Aherne's gets great reviews for their seafood, see Sleep.

The Red Store at 150 North Main St P36 XH10 is open M, Th-Sa 10AM-8PM, Su noon-7PM.

Coachouse Bar is within Imperial Hotel at 27 North Main St, open daily 1-9:30PM.

Roma Grill at 50 North Main St P36 CR64 is open Tu-Su 3-10PM.

Priory Coffee at 56 North Main St do drinks, light bites and deli, open daily 8AM-6PM. They also have outlets in Cork city, Mallow, Fermoy and Riverstick.

Luigi's at 72 North Main St P36 R594 is open W-Su.

Clancy's is an Irish restaurant on Front Strand.

John Huston's 1956 film Moby Dick used Youghal to represent New Bedford, Mass, and Huston worked from the pub, then called Linehans. You'll spot it by the gable-end mural depicting the whale. It has good local food.   ( updated Aug 2025 )

The Nook Bar aka Treacey's at 20 North Main Street is Youghal's oldest pub. They often have live music.

Others along the main street are Anchor Bar, Bertie's, The Quays, JD's Bar and Hennessey's.

Distillery: none in town, but Jameson whiskey is distilled at Midleton on the bus route to Cork.
