How do you get there?

Limerick is accessible by road, rail, air, and bus. Limerick railway station (Colbert Station) has services from Dublin Heuston (about 2 hours) and Ennis, Galway, and Cork. The M7 motorway connects to Dublin, and the M20 to Cork. Shannon Airport (SNN) is just 25 km west of the city with transatlantic and European connections. The city centre is walkable, with local buses for longer journeys.

Limerick is compact enough to explore on foot. For exploring the surrounding countryside and nearby attractions, a car or bicycle is recommended.

Built in the 13th century by King John over a Viking fortification. The walls, well bashed about over the years, enclose a large courtyard.

Widows Alms Houses just south of the castle were built in 1691 to house soldiers' widows.

Catherine McAuley House 100 m east of the castle is a home for elderly nuns, embellished by a vivid mural. There are stretches of the old city walls alongside, including a sally port.

Anglican cathedral founded in 1168, with the tower added in the 14th century. Features include the ceremonial Great West Door, the limestone-slab original altar, and the chandeliers. Buried in the nave is the last High King of Munster, Domnall Mór Ua Briain (d 1194). Sunday service is from 11AM, no visiting then.
