Why visit?

Connaught is a province in the west of Ireland, known for its dramatic Atlantic coastline, rugged mountains, and deep cultural heritage. Spanning counties Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon, and Sligo, Connaught encompasses some of Ireland's most iconic landscapes — from the Twelve Bens of Connemara and the stark blanket bogs of Mayo to the limestone pavements of the Burren's northern edge and the tranquil shores of Lough Corrib and Lough Mask.

The province has a distinct Gaeltacht (Irish-speaking) heartland in Connemara and the islands off the west coast, where traditional music, storytelling, and the Irish language remain a living part of daily life. Connaught's towns — Galway, Sligo, Westport, and Castlebar — are cultural hubs with vibrant arts scenes, while its villages offer a quieter, unhurried introduction to Irish rural life. Whether you come for the wild beauty of the Atlantic Drive, the literary echoes of W.B. Yeats in Sligo, or simply a pint in a traditional pub with live music, Connaught rewards every traveller.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit Connaught is from May to September, when the weather is mildest and the days are longest. July and August bring the warmest temperatures (averaging 15–20°C) but also the most visitors and the highest accommodation prices. June offers a good balance of pleasant weather and manageable crowds, while September can be glorious with its soft autumn light and fewer tourists.

Spring (March–April) sees the countryside burst into green, with lambs in the fields and wildflowers along the hedgerows. Autumn (October–November) brings rich colours to the bogs and woodlands. Winter (November–February) is quiet and atmospheric, ideal for storm-watching on the coast and cosy pub evenings, though many attractions operate on reduced hours or close entirely between November and Easter.

How do you get around?

A car is by far the most practical way to explore Connaught, as public transport connections to rural and coastal areas are limited. Major roads connect Galway, Sligo, and Westport reasonably well, but once you leave the main towns, narrow winding roads are the norm — expect slow travel and allow extra time.

Bus Éireann provides inter-city services linking Galway with Sligo (about 2.5 hours), Westport (1.5 hours), and Castlebar (1.5 hours). Local bus services connect smaller towns but are infrequent, especially on Sundays. Irish Rail operates a Dublin–Galway line (about 2.5 hours) and a Dublin–Westport line, both running several times daily. There are no rail services connecting Connaught towns directly — all routes radiate from Dublin.

What should you eat?

Connaught's cuisine is rooted in the Atlantic: oysters from Galway Bay, mussels from Clew Bay, salmon from the rivers Corrib and Moy, and the famous smoked fish of Connemara. The province is also known for its lamb — grazing on salt-marsh and mountain pastures gives the meat a distinctive flavour — and for its artisan cheeses, particularly from small farms in Mayo and Sligo.

Galway City has the most diverse dining scene, with everything from Michelin-starred restaurants (Aniar, Loam) to excellent seafood pubs (O'Grady's on the Pier, Moran's Oyster Cottage in Kilcolgan). In the west, Westport and Sligo have developed strong food cultures of their own, with farm-to-table restaurants and lively food festivals. Don't leave without trying a traditional boxty (potato pancake), Irish stew, or a pint of Galway Hooker ale.

What is the culture like?

Connaught is a powerhouse of Irish traditional music and culture. Galway's annual arts festival (July) draws international performers and audiences, while the Galway Oyster Festival (September) is one of Ireland's oldest and most beloved food events. Sligo celebrates its Yeats heritage with the Yeats International Summer School (July–August) and literary events throughout the year.

In Connemara, traditional music sessions are a nightly fixture in pubs throughout Clifden and Oughterard. The Fleadh Nua (traditional music festival) visits different towns each year, and smaller communities host pattern days, agricultural shows, and local festivals that offer genuine insight into Irish rural culture. Mayo's International Arts Festival (Castlebar, May–June) and the Westport Festival of Music (June) round out the cultural calendar.
